The Future is Now: Addressing Multidimensional Poverty for Sustainable Development

The Multidimensional Poverty Peer Network (MPPN) will host a high-level side on the margins of the UN General Assembly 2025 to showcase advancements in addressing multidimensional poverty and to highlight the global commitment to turning a corner on poverty. This event will bring together senior officials from governments and international organisations to discuss why poverty alleviation is pivotal for sustainable development, and how robust and comprehensive measurement tools, such as the Multidimensional Poverty Indices (MPIs), are essential to guide policies and programmes that aim to get back on track to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Permanent Mission of Uruguay to the United Nations, UNDP’s Regional Bureau of Latin America and the Caribbean (RBLAC), and the Multidimensional Poverty Peer Network (MPPN) were delighted to co-host a well-attended Side Event at the 2025 High-Level Political Forum in the UN Headquarters on 14 July. This event, titled “Measuring What Matters: How Multidimensional Poverty Indices Drive Evidence-Based Action for a Sustainable Future”, brought together high-level representatives from international agencies, governments, and OPHI’s MPI Ambassadors and Champions to discuss how Multidimensional Poverty Indices (MPIs) can accelerate the achievement of the SDGs and shape the agenda beyond 2030.

The Permanent Mission of Uruguay to the United Nations, UNDP’s Regional Bureau of Latin America and the Caribbean (RBLAC), and the Multidimensional Poverty Peer Network (MPPN) are hosting a high-level Side Event at the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) 2025 to encourage knowledge sharing and collective efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This event will bring together ministers, high-level government officials, and representatives from international agencies to discuss how Multidimensional Poverty Indices (MPIs) can accelerate the achievement of the SDGs and shape the agenda beyond 2030.

‘Our future is not predetermined’: leaders discuss poverty reduction and MPI at UNGA 79 MPPN event

On Tuesday 24 September, the Federal Republic of Somalia and the MPPN co-hosted a High-Level Side Meeting on multidimensional poverty at the UN Headquarters during the 79th UN General Assembly. The event, kindly supported by UNDP Somalia, was entitled ‘Sustainable and Targeted Poverty Solutions: Using the Multidimensional Poverty Index’ and brought together 21 leaders, countries and institutions to share insights from using Multidimensional Poverty Indices (MPIs) as sustainable and targeted poverty solutions.

Eradicating poverty in all its dimensions is the greatest global challenge, threatening and jeopardising sustainable development for all, with a greater impact on the most vulnerable. The Political Declaration of the 2023 UN General Assembly restated the vital importance of accelerating progress to reduce poverty in all its forms, prioritizing those experiencing interconnected deprivations and reversing widening inequalities.
